This movie is based on the 1988 case of 11 year old William Todd Knight. Knight, who was home alone after school, watched in horror as 3 men entered and attempted to steal a vcr. Using a rifle that he received as a gift from his parents for Christmas, William Todd Knight, fired 3 shots and called the police. When the police arrived they found 35 year old Danny Ray Abernathy and 39 year old Broadus Petty from Spartanburg outside dead. The third suspect got away. The 5th grader cried and cried when he was told by the police that they men were dead. It was the first and the last time that his parents left him at home along according to his parents Billy and Ann. His 18 year old sister, Tami, had left the home a little while earlier and the boy heard noises shortly afterward.

Tidbits

The shooting took place in Switzer, South Carolina.
After the shooting the press went crazy. Everyone wanted to interview him. Neighbors and the media were calling him a hero. Todd was terrified. He didn't like all of the attention, and he didn't think that he should be called a hero.
One of the robbers, Broadus Petty, had a criminal history dating back to 1966 in Una, South Carolina, where he was arrested for car theft. He was only 17 at the time. He and a companion stole a car from the parking lot of General Hospital after a night of drinking. The owner of the car was Joyce Mcmahon. Petty received 60 days in jail with 2 years probation after his release.
